Dwell

To dwell means that a horse is slow to leave the starting gate after the start signal. The term describes a delayed break: the gate opens, but the horse comes out later than the other runners.

What situation does it describe?

The Korean racing glossary uses the term for a horse that is ready for the start and receives the start signal but is late leaving the gate. The key is not merely that the horse raced near the back. It is the delayed movement out of the gate at the moment the race began.

How to spot it on race video

Watch the instant the front of the starting gate opens and follow each horse as it exits. Do not work backwards from a horse’s later position and assume it dwelt simply because it ran near the rear. A horse may break normally and then lose or surrender position during the opening stages, so the start and the subsequent race pattern need to be assessed separately.

Do not assume the cause

Dwelling describes what was observed at the start; it does not establish why it happened. A single video angle or the term itself cannot confirm the cause. If that detail matters, look for an explanation in the official race information rather than attributing the delay to the horse’s habits or training without evidence.
